Single Logon Enforcer

The Single Logon Enforcer (SLE) is a system for preventing multiple simultaneous logons to a MindLeaders courseware installation by a single student ID.

The heart of this system is the session table. While a student is taking courses a record is set for that student’s account in the session table. This effectively locks anyone else out of that account until the session record is removed. The student should use the Exit button to log out of the course in order to remove their record from the session table (so that the student will not be locked out when they next attempt to log in). However, old session records are also removed by a program called sessclnr.exe, which runs periodically as a service on Windows NT or by a scheduler on Unix. Sessclnr.exe removes records that are currently older than the time out period. As students answer questions (or take any other action that runs one of DPEC’s cgi programs) the time out period is updated so active students will not be logged out prematurely.
