Web Server FAQs

Q. How do I change the Admin password?
A. If you want to change an Admin password, you must delete the original Administrator and add a new Administrator with a new password. We do suggest that you add an Administrator and test the access before deleting the old Administrator.To change your Admin password:

1. On the server machine, go to a DOS prompt and change to the dpec\scripts directory.

2. Add an Administrator:

NT: dpecdata addmanager newadminID firstname lastname 0 main password

Unix: ./dpecdata.exe addmanager newadminID firstname lastname 0 main password

3. Delete a user (Administrator):

NT: dpecdata removestudent oldadminID

Unix: ./dpecdata.exe removestudent oldadminID

Q. I get the following message when attempting to sign into Web Admin:“DPEC Select has expired.” How do I enter a new expiration key?
A. To enter a system expiration key:

1. On the server machine, go to a DOS prompt and change to the dpec\scripts directory, or change to the cgi-bin directory.

2. Run the following command:

NT: dpecdata setexpiration [key]

Unix: ./dpecdata.exe setexpiration [key]

3. Substitute with the system expiration key that you were provided.

Q. Do all students need to be preregistered to use the MindLeaders courses?
A. Students may register themselves if Self Registration is enabled by the Administrator. With the current release, students may be preregistered using the web administration program or using a batch file. Contact MindLeaders Technical Support for details.

Q. On my web server, can I install MindLeaders courses to a directory other than the default c:\inetpub\wwwroot\dpec (NT) or home/httpd/html/dpec (Unix)?
A. By default the MindLeaders courses are installed in a directory named dpec in the web server’s root directory. For example, with Microsoft’s Internet Information Server the files are installed in c:\inetpub\wwwroot\dpec. You may choose to install the files in another location or locations, but there are a few restrictions.

1. The executable files installed in the dpec\scripts directory must appear to be in the /dpec/scripts (NT) or cgi-bin (Unix) path on your web server whether they are physically located in wwwroot\dpec\scripts directory or in another physical directory that has been mapped on the web server to the /dpec/scripts or cgi-bin virtual directory. If the script location is changed, the sim.ini in /dpec/courses must be changed to reflect the URL location of scripts. For example:

http://www.mindleaders.com/dpec/cgi-bin

2. If you choose to move the courses directory, you should adjust the settings in the dpec.ini file to reflect the new location. The executable programs need the physical location (localCoursePath) and the web location (wwwCoursePath) of the courses directory. For example:

localCoursePath=c:\inetpub\wwwroot\courses\

wwwCoursePath=/courses/

3. If you choose to move the data directory, you should adjust the settings in the dpec.ini file to reflect the new location. The executable programs need the physical location (localDataPath) of the data directory. For example:
localDataPath=c:\inetpub\wwwroot\data

Q. When installing to Windows 2000 Server, I receive a non-descriptive error message.
A. To install MindLeaders courses onto Windows 2000 Server, you must be signed on as an Administrator.

Troubleshooting

Q. When clicking on option to Download Authorware Web Player, user is prompted for username and password.
A. The web server software has been configured to protect the directory where Authorware Web Player is with a user ID and password. It is necessary to unprotect the directory that contains the Authorware Web Player installers. Refer to your server documentation on anonymous access, security, or access control.

Q. When attempting to launch MindLeaders courses from signon page “405 Error.”
A. There are various resolutions for this item. First, verify the scripts are set to Execute (including script) for IIS4, or world rx on Apache.

It is also possible you have set DPEC up as a virtual server or host. If that is the case, you would need to adjust the DPEC.INI to reflect the appropriate wwwCoursePath and wwwAdminPath to eliminate the /dpec directory. You will also need to run fixcgi to change the scripts location. Please contact MindLeaders Technical Support for further assistance with using the fixcgi command.

Q. “Error –51” when running UPDATEDB on database files
A. This error happens in cases where there is an old table, but it has no records. Disregard error and continue with update process.

Q. When attempting to launch MindLeaders courses from signon page “HTTP/1.0 401 object not found .”
A. The HTML document tree is somewhere other than the installed location of MindLeaders courses. Is the dpec directory the only thing in the c:\inetpub\wwwroot or home/html/httpd/ directory? If the server is used for other processes, there should be other files there as well. The recommended install location is in the root which is /.

Q. I ran UpdateDB to update my database structure, but no back-ups of my existing database tables were created.
A. UpdateDB has two main functions: 1) If the menu version is prior to the CD dated2/98, UpdateDB backs up the database files and converts them into the correct version, then updates the course information according to the DPEC table. 2) If the menu is already updated, UpdateDB simply updates the course information without converting the database table structure.

Q. When clicking on Submit to answer a question, student is returned to course login screen.
A. Generally this issue is related to not having cookies enabled in the student browser. However, a recent Microsoft Security Patch (MS01-58) to Internet Explorer 5.5 will cause this error on intranet installations, if the domain name of a server has an underscore character in it. Contact your internal MIS department or representative responsible for maintaining your intranet connectivity for further assistance.

"I believe this course was one of the best on-line courses I have ever seen. Seamless interactive lessons and great chunking of info. I especially liked the fact that if I closed out of the session, the system remembered exactly where I left off - very handy feature! Cant wait to take more training!"
