Delayed Packing Instructions

For ease of use with small web server installations, use the default installation. If you have a large installation with more than 100 simultaneous (or concurrent) users, refer to the information below on delayed packing.

Delayed Packing of MindLeaders Database Files
Normally the database tables are packed whenever records are deleted. Delayed packing postpones the table packing until a time chosen by the system administrator. When database tables are small, the time taken in packing is normally not a problem. As the tables grow, packing takes longer. Since packing is one of the very few times the tables must be opened for exclusive access (instead of multi-user shared access), this can lead to performance problems as the tables grow.

The DPECDATA command, which is found in the scripts directory with the CGI scripts, is used to manage the delayed packing feature. Two options of the DPECDATA command control table packing.

The UpdateDelayPackFlag option enables or disables delayed packing. The option takes one argument which is either a 0 (zero) to disable delayed packing or a 1 (one) to enable delayed packing. To enable delayed packing, go to the \dpec\scripts directory and execute the following command:

dpecdata UpdateDelayPackFlag 1

The PackTables option allows you to manually pack the tables at a time of your choice. It takes one argument which must be the word "all". Packing individual tables is not yet supported. Only tables that need to be packed are packed. To pack tables manually go to the \dpec\scripts directory and give the following command:

dpecdata PackTables all

Packing of tables can be automated using NT's "AT" command (or scheduling utility of your choice) to schedule the "dpecdata PackTables all" command to be run on a regular basis. Normally the full path to the dpecdata command must be specified so that the scheduled service can find the executable file. For further assistance on using the "AT" command, please consult Windows NT's online help by choosing Windows NT Commands in the Help contents and selecting the "AT" command.
