Downsizing and demographics are combining into a perfect storm destined to cause havoc with many companies succession planning efforts.
The reduction in force that many companies (and industries) have encountered in the past three years has depleted organizations of much of their institutional knowledge and bench strength.
Now, the inevitability of demographics is exacerbating the problem. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics*, baby boomers will be leaving the workforce faster than new entrants can replace them. While the number of available jobs will grow 14.8% from 2002 to 2012 (144 Million to 165 Million or 21 million new jobs), the U.S. will only have 17 million new job entrants during that time, leaving a void of 4 million jobs outsourced or unfilled.
The shortage is most critical in mature industries such as manufacturing and government which tend to have older work forces and is less critical in newer industries such as the high-tech sector.
A key issue for many Human Resource departments will be how to effectively develop and manage succession planning and how to align training with those objectives to efficiently boost skill levels. MindLeaders PLuS personal learning service is being used by many companies to help with that task.
